Iga Swiatek was pushed harder than expected in her second-round clash at the US Open, but she battled through to stay alive in New York.
The Wimbledon champion needed three sets to overcome world number 66 Suzan Lamens, eventually sealing a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 win in two hours and six minutes.
At first, the match looked like another routine victory for the second seed. She raced through the opening set with her trademark power and precision, giving little away.
However, her level suddenly dipped in the second set as unforced errors crept in, handing Lamens a lifeline and forcing the contest into a decider.

Frustration was visible on Swiatek’s face as she squandered leads, but her champion’s mentality came to the surface when it mattered. Despite the setback, she regrouped in the third set and quickly established a double-break cushion, closing out the contest with greater focus and discipline.
Swiatek admits struggles but keeps momentum alive
After the match, Swiatek was candid about her performance. She admitted to making “some mistakes” and felt the outcome depended largely on her ability to stay composed. Yet, she emphasised that the final set gave her the chance to reset, start fresh, and play with greater precision.
Moreover, the six-time Grand Slam winner stated that her proactive mindset was the turning point. She stressed that determination helped her overcome the mid-match wobble.
Swiatek now turns her focus to the third round, where she will face Russia’s 29th seed Anna Kalinskaya. The Polish star knows she must raise her consistency if she is to extend her US Open journey and reinforce her status as one of the favourites.
