The Anambra State Police Command has stepped up operations in Awka and surrounding areas to ensure a crime-free celebration of the annual Imoka festival.

Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer revealed this in a statement on Tuesday.

This follows intelligence reports that some miscreants were exploiting the festivities to engage in criminal activities and disrupt public peace.

In the late evening of Monday, officers from the Rapid Respond Squad (RRS) in Awka arrested 25-year-old Nasiru Samaila during a raid on identified black spots.

The police recovered a locally made Beretta pistol, one live round of ammunition, a knife, and a significant quantity of suspected hard drugs.

According to the police, the suspect opened fire in an attempt to escape but was subdued after being shot in the right leg.

Unfortunately, one police officer sustained a gunshot wound during the incident and is currently receiving treatment in hospital.

The command reiterated its commitment to enforcing the law and maintaining public safety during the festival period, assuring the public that further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
