The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that all is set for the by-elections taking place this Saturday, August 16, 2025, across 16 constituencies in 12 states.
This update was contained in a statement released on Thursday by Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, after the commission’s weekly meeting in Abuja.
According to the statement, the polls will be held in two senatorial districts in Anambra and Edo States, five federal constituencies in Edo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Ogun, and Oyo States, as well as nine state constituencies in Adamawa, Anambra, Kaduna (two constituencies), Kano, Kogi, Niger, Taraba, and Zamfara States. Court-ordered re-run elections will also be conducted in Enugu South I State Constituency in Enugu State and Ghari/Tsanyawa State Constituency in Kano State on the same day.
“All non-sensitive materials for the election have been delivered to the States. Election technology, such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, has been configured for the election.
“The recruitment and training of ad hoc staff as well as security and logistics arrangements, have been concluded. The final consignment of sensitive materials will be delivered today as scheduled,” Olumekun said.

The commission also reminded political parties and candidates that the campaign window closes by midnight on Thursday.
“With less than 48 hours to the opening of polls, the commission reiterates its appeal to all those involved in the bye-elections as political parties, candidates, voters, party agents, observers and the media to adhere strictly to the provisions of the law, regulations and guidelines. Doing so will ensure seamless processes,” Olumekun stated.
In a related development, INEC disclosed that the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise will resume soon. The commission revealed that its online pre-registration portal will open on August 18, 2025, while physical registration will commence on August 25, 2025, at its 811 state and local government offices nationwide.
Olumekun explained that the list and locations of registration centres, as well as dedicated phone numbers for assistance, will be available on INEC’s website and online platforms, with the CVR Locator going live on August 17.
The CVR exercise will allow eligible citizens to register for the first time, request a transfer of their registration within or across states, or replace lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards.
“During the CVR, citizens will also have the opportunity to transfer their registration within a State or to other States of the Federation. Similarly, damaged or lost PVCs will be replaced as provided by law.
“It needs to be re-emphasised that the CVR is only open to Nigerian citizens who are 18 years or older and who have not registered before, as double or multiple registration is a punishable offence under the law,” he said.
