Inter Milan left it late but stunningly defeated Bayern Munich 2-1 in their Champions League quarter-final first-leg encounter.
Although the German giants dominated the early proceedings, it was Inter who made their few chances count.
Bayern controlled the opening exchanges, with Harry Kane striking the post from a curling effort. However, despite that dominance, they conceded to Inter’s first attempt on target.
The Italians broke the deadlock in the 38th minute after a swift team move. Marcus Thuram leapt to flick the ball beautifully into Lautaro Martinez’s path, and the Argentine finished brilliantly with the outside of the boot into the roof of the net.

Although Bayern kept pushing, they couldn’t convert their pressure into goals. Michael Olise had two decent efforts, one deflected wide and another saved comfortably.

Kane also had opportunities to equalise, including a header and a curled finish that struck the post. Yet Inter held firm and remained a threat on the break.
Even though Bayern’s rhythm faded in the second half, they found late joy. Substitute Thomas Müller pounced to level in the 85th minute from close range after Konrad Laimer’s low cross.
That goal looked like it had secured a draw and a fitting moment for Müller, who recently announced his departure. But Inter had other ideas.

Just two minutes later, Inter countered with precision. Carlos Augusto surged forward and delivered a pinpoint cross that Davide Frattesi converted to restore their lead.
Not only did the win hand Inter a vital advantage, but it also ended Bayern’s 22-game home unbeaten Champions League run. Their last European home defeat had come in 2021.
As a result, Bayern now face a tall task in Italy with the return leg set for April 16. The winner of this tie will face either Barcelona or Borussia Dortmund in the semi-final. Interestingly, the final will be held at Bayern’s home, the Allianz Arena.
