Is Mohamed Salah the greatest African to ever play in the Premier League?

Mohamed Salah made strong case for himself as the greatest African player in Premier League history with another dazzling performance in Liverpool’s 6-3 triumph over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

His latest record-breaking appearance puts him in solid position to claim the top scorer’s prize as he leads the Premier League Golden Boot race.

The Egyptian’s total achievements over the course of his Liverpool career has also seen a lot of fans, critics, analysts, and pundits refer to him as the greatest African player in ever grace the English Premier League.

Salah netted twice against Spurs, reaching 15 goals this season, two ahead of Manchester City’s Erling Haaland. While Haaland has managed only three goals in his last 12 matches, Salah has found the net 12 times in the same period.

If Salah secures this season’s Golden Boot, it would mark his fourth, equaling French legend Thierry Henry’s record. Only Henry, Alan Shearer, and Harry Kane boast three Golden Boots alongside Salah. This obviously shows how far the Liverpool star’s consistency has continued to place him among the Premier League’s elite forwards.

Salah’s brilliance extended beyond goals, as he contributed two assists against Ange Postecoglou’s side, raising his season tally to 11. This puts him ahead of Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka, making Salah the frontrunner for both the Golden Boot and Playmaker awards. Remarkably, he achieved a similar double in the 2021/22 season.

Salah smashes three records in one match

In doing so, Salah shattered three records. He became the first Premier League player to record 10+ goals and assists before Christmas.

Additionally, he is the only player to achieve this feat in four consecutive seasons since the league’s inception in 1992.

Salah also surpassed Wayne Rooney for the most Premier League campaigns with 10+ goals and assists, now achieving it six times.

Egyptian among Liverpool’s all-time top scorers

On Liverpool’s all-time scoring chart, Salah moved into fourth with 229 goals, overtaking club legend Billy Liddell. Gordon Hodgson’s 241-goal tally now stands in Salah’s sights, though Ian Rush’s record of 346 goals remains distant.

With 172 Premier League goals, Salah is closing in on Arsenal icon Thierry Henry. He could surpass Henry, Frank Lampard, Sergio Agüero, and Andrew Cole to become the league’s fourth-highest scorer by season’s end.

Reflecting on his achievements, Salah said, “I’m proud and happy. I’ll keep working hard to help the team.” As the season progresses, Salah’s historic run shows no signs of slowing.

Many have spoken of the greatest of Premier League stars and rightly so. Players like Didier Drogba, Kanu Nwankwo, Yaya Toure, Emmanuel Adebayor, amongst others.

However, with Salah’s incredible consistency in terms of goals, assists, and general team performances, it’s difficult for Premier League lovers to shy away from making a strong case for the acknowledgement of Salah as the greatest African player to grace the Premier League.
