‘It’s the end of the world’: Amorim sounds alarm as Manchester United hits historic low

Manchester United’s season has been an extremely disappointing one, and manager Ruben Amorim isn’t holding back.

After a dismal 2-0 home loss to West Ham – who hadn’t won in eight previous matches – the Portuguese manager delivered a brutally honest assessment of the club’s current crisis.

With just two wins since January 26, both against relegated teams, United find themselves on a shocking seven-game winless run. They have now matched their worst ever streak in the Premier League.

The decline has prompted Amorim to question whether he should remain in charge if the rot continues next season.

Worryingly, the Red Devils are projected to end the campaign with their lowest points total since the 1930-31 relegation season. They currently sit in 16th place, with only three teams below them – including Europa League final opponents, Tottenham.

‘We’ve lost the fear of losing’

Amorim believes the club has lost its identity. “We’re losing the feeling that losing at Old Trafford is the end of the world,” he lamented. According to him, this lack of fear and urgency is the most dangerous sign for any big club.

Although the Europa League final offers a potential escape route – possibly rescuing Champions League qualification and up to £100 million in revenue – Amorim says it’s a smaller issue compared to the cultural decay at United. For him, a trophy won’t mask deeper rot within the team’s mentality and work ethic.

Amorim also slammed the players’ inconsistency, stating that urgency only appears in European competition. “In the league, we’re not focused. It’s hard to explain, but everything lacks urgency,” he said.

Despite these honest reflections, Amorim insists change must come from within. “If we start next season like this, then others should take over,” he said. He called for bold summer decisions and structural reform as he echoed the sentiment once voiced by Ralf Rangnick.

While the final in Bilbao offers a flicker of hope, Amorim believes the real battle lies in rediscovering the pride and standards that once defined the club. If not, even European success may feel hollow.
