The evening ended in a disappointing note for the three-times champions, Super Eagles who took the lead in the first half through a William Troost-Ekong’s header in the 38th minute. The Super Eagles went ahead despite the Elephants having much of the possession and outplaying their West African counterpart.
In the second half of the match, Frank Kessie equalized for the host before Sebastian Haller scored the winning goal in the 81st minute after receiving a cross from Brighton’s playmaker, Simon Adingra.
The Elephant’s win means they have amassed three AFCON titles just like the Super Eagles of Nigeria who last won the title in 2013.
