Ja Morant ignites controversy again despite heroics in Grizzlies’ win over Heat

Ja Morant has found himself in controversy once again, despite leading the Memphis Grizzlies to a thrilling 110-108 victory over Miami.

Despite a prior warning from the NBA, the Grizzlies star repeated his infamous finger gun gesture during the win.

Notably, the act came shortly after he made a similar gesture against the Golden State Warriors. The league had previously issued a caution, labeling the move inappropriate even though it wasn’t seen as violent. Regardless, Morant defied that instruction just minutes into the Miami game.

Meanwhile, his celebration has reignited debates, especially given his history with gun-related issues. Back in March 2023, Morant was suspended eight games for flashing a firearm during an Instagram Live session. Later that year, another video earned him a 25-game ban to start the 2023–24 season.

Even so, his on-court brilliance couldn’t be denied. Although Miami levelled the game at 108 thanks to a clutch jumper by Tyler Herro, Morant had the final say. He shook off Kel’el Ware and drained a dramatic step-back jumper that bounced around the rim before falling in at the buzzer.

“A pigeon guarding me. Go get a bucket, win the game,” he declared after hitting the winner. Additionally, he credited the crowd’s energy for fueling his second-half surge.

“The crowd getting to booing me, they just woke me up for the second half and I’m pretty sure they’re not happy going home now.”

Statistically, Morant’s numbers backed up his performance. He logged 30 points in 32 minutes and 24 seconds of action. Moreover, he shot 11-of-22 from the field and hit 3-of-7 from deep.

Alongside his scoring, Morant added five rebounds, three assists, and one steal to round off a complete showing. Although the league has yet to announce further punishment, his decision to ignore their warning could prompt new disciplinary talks.

Meanwhile, his current season averages remain impressive: 22.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 7.3 assists per game.

Now, with the Grizzlies looking to climb the standings, Morant’s consistency and conduct will both remain under the microscope. Whether he faces fresh sanctions or not, the pressure to lead responsibly is growing louder.
