Jamie Carragher names two England stars Southgate must drop ahead of the Slovenia match

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Former Liverpool and England defender, Jamie Carragher has named the two England stars manager Gareth Southgate needs to drop ahead of the Slovenia match.

The Three Lions have so far been underwhelming at the European Championship only managing to scrape a 1 nil win in their first game against Serbia. England were also lucky to get a draw in their second game against Denmark who were clearly the better side on the night.

England remain top of group C with four points and are likely to qualify for the round of 16 even if they lose against Slovenia.

Carragher, writing in The Telegraph suggested Southgate’s side reminded him of his England era where a manager attempted to fit all their star players into the same team.

According to Jamie, “Gareth Southgate came into #EURO2024 & picked his best players. It hasnā€™t worked. Heā€™s now got to pick his best team & sacrifice quality for pace & energy. England look shattered & canā€™t get the ball back off the opposition.”

Jamie went further to ask for Trent Alexander-Arnold and Phil Foden to be sacrificed for the good of the team.

“Introducing Alexander-Arnold into midfield in a major tournament was always a risk. It has not worked.”

“Elsewhere in the side, nobody loves watching Foden more than me. But for England to come up with a system that works and complements everyone, he cannot operate in the starting XI with Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane if they are all trying to occupy the same space and positions.”

Either we agree with Jamie or not, Southgate surely needs to make some changes if England are to progress to the later stages of Germany 2024.
