1903- Houdini escapes in Amsterdam
The famous magician and escape artist, Harry Houdini performed a famous public stunt in Amsterdam where he escaped from a local police jail cell. He was locked in a cell at the Halvemaansteeg police station in Amsterdam, Holland, during his European tour. His hands and feet were shackled and he wore little clothing to avoid any suspicion of having hidden tools. Houdini escaped successfully in just five minutes in front of a massive crowd of spectators and police officials. This act further cemented his reputation as the “king of handcuffs”.
1905- Remembering the Fashion Legend, ‘Dior’
Today, celebrating his birth, we celebrate the founder of the iconic, enduring luxury house, Christian Dior. Dior was born on January 21, 1905, in Granville, France. After pursuing political science, he transitioned to fashion, eventually establishing his own house, Maison Dior, in 1946. His fame rose after introducing his 1947 collection, ‘New Look’, which was notable for its use of luxurious fabrics at a time when materials were still rationed post-World War II.
Under his lead, the Christian Dior brand became one of the most recognizable luxury brands in the world. Following his death, the Dior brand still remains renowned for its stellar quality and classic elegance.

1921- Agatha Christie publishes her first novel
British crime writer Agatha Christie published her debut novel, “The Mysterious Affair at Styles” on January 21, 1921. This is where she introduced her famous investigator character, Hercules Poirot. The novel was actually the result of a dare from her sister Madge who challenged her to write a story. This would mark the beginning of her literary success.
1982- Jet Li makes his debut role in “Shaolin Temple”
It’s been 44 years since the premiere of ‘Shaolin Temple’, which marked Jet Li’s iconic film debut. This launched his career as a martial arts superstar, where he showcased his real-life Wushu skills. His role revitalized interest in the Shaolin martial arts not only in China but also beyond. The movie was famous for its authentic action and spectacular fight choreography.
When asked about the making of the movie, Jet had this to say, ‘My first film was easier than martial arts training. On set, if something goes wrong, you can do it again. In real training, you can’t…you either win or lose’.
1993- Fela Kuti is arrested on suspicion for murder
Afrobeats legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti was arrested on January 21, 1993 on allegations of murder and conspiracy following the death of an electrician and employee, Adesanwo Shokoya. According to the then Deputy Police Commissioner, James Danbada, the electrician was killed by Fela’s bodyguards after he accused the musician of cheating him of $138.
Fela viewed the charges as a politically motivated persecution for his activism. “These people aren’t serious. It’s just another one of their ploys to trap me”, Fela said.
