Award-winning Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has revealed that she welcomed her twin boys through surrogacy, a decision she says she has “zero regrets” about.

In an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, the 47-year-old writer opened up about her journey to motherhood and the societal stigma often associated with non-traditional methods of procreation.

“My boys are so precious to me. And I hated that anything about them would become politicised — so on the one hand I thought ‘I wish I hadn’t talked about it’, but on the other hand there is no way I am going to lie,” she said during the interview.

Adichie addressed the criticism and judgment that many women face when they explore options such as surrogacy or adoption. She expressed hope that her story would encourage others to speak openly without shame.

“I am hoping that if anything good comes out of this, it would be that more women will feel less ashamed of talking about reaching motherhood through non-traditional means,” she said.

“There are other women who have babies by surrogates but they sort of go and hide for nine months or people who adopt babies and they go and hide because our society is so judgemental, and I don’t think that that is good for anybody,” she added.

The novelist also emphasized the importance of ethical practices in surrogacy and spoke against narratives that portray the process as dehumanising.

Adichie referred to her children as her “greatest gifts” and stressed the need for a more accepting society where women are not criticized for their reproductive choices.
