Kaffy: A Dance Practitioner Par Excellence



Many have dreams of achieving excellence in their chosen field. With that consciousness, they infuse focus, diligence, and consistency into their work. This makes them stand out and they become role models for others in society. Nigeria’s foremost dancer – Kaffy – is among those who fit into this narrative.

For her decision to remain steadfast on a path that has brought her fame and recognition over the years, she is NRTC’s Personality of the Month of December.

Previously on this feature, we have had ‘Fisayo Soyombo, Mo Abudu, Mike Bamiloye, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Folarin Falana (Falz), and Akinwunmi Adesina.

Who is Kaffy?

Born Kafayat Oluwatoyin Shafau on June 30, 1980, Kaffy is a dancer, choreographer, fitness coach, and dance instructor. She is the boss at Imagneto Dance Company. Her creativity and exploits in the business of dance spans across two decades.

She has featured in musical videos for artistes such as Sunny Nneji, Timaya, D’banj, Ruggedman, P-Square, Olamide and Tiwa Savage, to name a few.

The talented dancer is an alumnus of Chrisland School, Opebi, where she had her primary education. She attended Coker Secondary School, Orile-Iganmu and Yaba College of Technology. At Olabisi Onabanjo University, she obtained a diploma in data processing.

The 40-year-old had a childhood dream of becoming an Aeronautic Engineer. However, dance found her as she grew into adulthood.

Innovative & Skilful Kaffy

Kaffy is famous for breaking the Guinness World Record for “Longest Dance Party” at the Nokia Silverbird Danceathon in 2006. She led her dance group and they danced for 55 hours and 40 minutes.

In 2017, she created a dance convention called ‘The Dance Workshop’ which targets “training and mentoring professional dancers as well as promoting cultural exchange within the Nigerian dance industry.”

Kaffy has also featured in reality shows, such as the Malta Guinness Street Dance where she was a judge; on Project Fame West Africa as a faculty member and on Dance with Peter as a judge and faculty instructor.

Award and Recognition

It is also worthy to note that, the prolific dancer and pace setter has been awarded for her work over the years.

In 2014, African Muzik Magazine Awards recognized her as the Best Female Dancer of the Year. More so, in 2015, she won the Best Choreographer of the Year at The Beatz Awards. And in 2018, she received the Special Recognition Award at The Headies Awards.

An honour well deserved

On November 10, 2020 Escae Benin University in the Republic of Benin awarded Kaffy with an Honorary Doctorate for being a ‘pioneer in the business of dance in Africa’.

During the ceremony; the registrar of the university, Matthew Godwin Mario, said: “The university is giving this award to you (Kaffy) for your outstanding contribution in the areas of youth development, empowerment, entertainment, and philanthropy. Your leadership qualities and your profundity of thoughts have placed you on a pedestal above your equals.”

Kaffy is married to Joseph Ameh and they are blessed with two children.

The renowned dancer has stepped into the circle of great women and has inspired many to dream big against all odds.

Kafayat Shafau-Ameh is an inspiration to young talents and a role model to aspiring dancers. A dance practitioner par excellence, truly.
