Kano Governor reinstates Lamido Sanusi as Emir of Kano, dissolves five emirates

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has reinstated Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano.

This makes Mr. Sanusi both the 14th and 16th emir, having served in two separate terms.

Sanusi, a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, was initially installed in 2014 by then-Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, the political godfather of current Governor Yusuf.

Sanusi succeeded Ado Bayero, whose son, Aminu Ado-Bayero, replaced Sanusi following his removal and now becomes his predecessor.

The announcement of Sanusi’s reappointment was made by Governor Yusuf on Thursday at the Kano Government House during a ceremonial signing event attended by top government officials and journalists.

Before the public signing, Governor Yusuf had signed a law passed by the state House of Assembly in a closed event with the speaker, Jibrin Falgore, and state kingmakers.

The new law dissolved all five emirates and removed the first-class emirs of Gaya, Bichi, Rano, Kano, and Karaye.

Sanusi, who was dethroned on March 9, 2020, by then-Governor Abdullahi Ganduje on charges of insubordination and political interference, is expected to return to Kano on Friday and lead the congregational Jummat prayer at the Central Mosque.

Governor Yusuf has given the five former emirs 48 hours to vacate their palaces and hand over all government properties to the Commissioner of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
