Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw has expressed strong disapproval of media personality Ifedayo Agoro, also known as Diary of a Naija Girl, for opting to have a child through surrogacy even though she is in good health.

Speaking during a recent interview, the 52-year-old actress argued that surrogacy is being misused in Nigeria and is gradually losing its original intent—to support couples struggling with infertility or medical complications.

“I watched Ife’s video and I was wondering, why?” Henshaw said in reference to Agoro’s public disclosure about her surrogacy decision. “She’s healthy and has nothing wrong with her. What is your reason for wanting someone else to carry your child? It is a means to exploit people who are not financially capable.”

Henshaw also raised concerns about the ethical and legal gaps surrounding surrogacy in Nigeria, particularly the protection of women who serve as surrogates.

“Are you bound under any laws or legal framework to ensure that they [surrogates] are taken care of before and after they deliver the baby for you? What documents are being signed? What is the ethical framework?” she queried.

According to her, surrogacy should not be treated casually.

“Surrogacy is a thing of giving hope to those who cannot have their kids or have medical complications. It shouldn’t be something done lightly like you’re going to buy a bag,” she said.

She emphasized that the process carries deep emotional and psychological implications.

“There are lots of emotions attached. Apart from changes in the body, it’s mental. It’s not something that can be thought of lightly. I hope Nigeria rises up and we implement laws that actively work,” Henshaw added.
