Kwara govt moves to curb street begging, others

The Kwara State Government has announced its intention to tackle the rising cases of street begging, hawking, child labour, and other social vices through legal means.

The Commissioner for Social Development, Mariam Nnafatima Imam said this was in a renewed effort to promote safety and social order across the state.

Imam disclosed this during a courtesy visit to the Chief Judge of Kwara State, Justice Ayodele Adebara, at the High Court of Justice in Ilorin.

Imam emphasised the Ministry’s commitment to the protection of vulnerable groups and the eradication of harmful street activities that threaten the well-being of residents.

She noted that while efforts have been ongoing to address these challenges, progress has been slow due to repeat offences by culprits.

“To effectively combat the menace of street begging and hawking, there is a need for a legal framework that ensures swift prosecution and appropriate penalties for offenders,” she said.

“This will serve as a deterrent and encourage behavioural change.”

The Commissioner also reaffirmed Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s continued support for initiatives aimed at safeguarding the welfare of children and disadvantaged citizens.

She further called for the involvement of traditional rulers in addressing these issues through local structures and cultural influence.

In his response, the Chief Judge lauded Governor AbdulRazaq’s unwavering commitment to justice and equity and commended the Ministry for its proactive approach.

He assured the Commissioner of the Judiciary’s readiness to collaborate on strategic action plans aimed at curbing street-based social vices.

Justice Adebara affirmed that the Judiciary would support the enforcement of policies that promote social responsibility and enhance the quality of life for all Kwarans.
