Kwara govt warns transporters against illegal garages, parks

The Kwara State Government has issued a stern warning to all commercial transport operators to desist from operating at unauthorised motor parks and illegal roadside garages, citing growing concerns over public safety.

The State Commissioner for Transportation, Lafia Aliyu Korasabi, gave the warning during a recent inspection exercise conducted jointly with the State Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) and the Kwara Road Traffic Management Authority (KWARTMA) across the Ilorin metropolis.

Korasabi emphasised the critical importance of using well-coordinated motor parks, noting that they are key to safeguarding the lives of residents and supporting Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s agenda of modernising Kwara’s traffic management system to meet evolving global standards.

The inspection team covered major areas including Post Office, Challenge, Offa Garage, Adisco, and the Baba Ode–Ita-Elepa axis, as part of efforts to eliminate illegal motor parks and enforce transport regulations more strictly.

Advising commuters to prioritise their personal security, the Commissioner urged them to patronise only government-approved motor parks, where vehicle documentation and operational standards are properly monitored and enforced.

He further revealed that the government is working towards developing a comprehensive database of all recognised garages in the state, aimed at strengthening security and improving coordination within the transport sector.

Accompanying the Commissioner during the exercise was the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Alhaji Salau Kabiru Abdullahi; Directors from the Ministry; the Chief Executive Officer of KWARTMA, Suleiman Abdullahi Oba; the Chief Vehicle Inspection Officer, Engr. Ayuba Isiaq; alongside other ministry officials and state road traffic officers.
