La Liga: Barcelona crowned kings of Spain for 28th time following Espanyol win

Barcelona sealed their 28th La Liga crown in stunning style on Thursday night after overcoming city rivals Espanyol 2-0 on Thursday night.

Despite the tense atmosphere at the RCDE Stadium, Barcelona played with confidence and control. After a goalless first half, it was 17-year-old wonderkid Lamine Yamal who broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute.

Gliding past two defenders on the edge of the box, he curled a trademark left-footed finish into the far corner, leaving the Espanyol goalkeeper rooted.

Yamal’s flair, composure, and consistency have positioned him firmly as Barcelona’s present and future. The win, secured with two games to spare, capped off a remarkable first year for new manager Hansi Flick.

As the game wore on, the tension boiled over. Espanyol’s hopes of a comeback were shattered in the 80th minute when Leandro Cabrera received a straight red card.

The 33-year-old Uruguayan defender had struck Yamal during a heated contest for possession. The dismissal left the hosts exposed in the dying moments.

Barcelona took full advantage of the numerical superiority. In stoppage time, Fermín López pounced to add a second goal, calmly finishing to wrap up the victory. With that strike, the result was beyond doubt, and the title was officially in the bag.

Although Real Madrid had delayed Barcelona’s title party with a win over Mallorca a day earlier, Flick’s men only needed two more points to secure the league.

Now, they’ve surpassed that target in emphatic fashion. Moreover, the win followed a thrilling 4-3 El Clásico triumph on Sunday. They fantastically completed a clean sweep over their fiercest rivals this season.

In addition to LaLiga glory, Barcelona also lifted the Copa del Rey and reached the Champions League semifinals.
