The Minister of Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, has called on the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to join forces with the government to ensure a strike-free 2024 academic year.
This information was released in a statement signed by the Director, Press and Public Relations of the ministry,Olajide Oshundun.
According to the statement, the minister said it is now imperative for every sector of the country, including education, to be on the same page to achieve Tinubu’s administrationās Renewed Hope Agenda.
Onyejeocha made the call during a round table discussion between the federal government and the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on the way forward to ensure smooth academic session in Nigeria in 2024 and beyond.
She said aside being a product of the university system, she expressed her desire to shift the role of the Ministry of Labour and Employment beyond simply mediating disputes during strikes.

According to her, āWe should be part of the process to ensure such actions are averted,ā she declared, advocating for proactive problem-solving rather than reactive conflict resolution.ā
While craving the indulgence of the leadership of ASUU led by its President, Emmanuel Osodeke, to allow the ministry to know all the problems of the union, the Minister said she believes that with mutual understanding, they can all moved the country in the same direction.
Addressing the leadership of the Union, Onyejeocha extended an open invitation for dialogue and complete transparency, noting that by prioritising open communication and proactive problem-solving strategy, both parties can work together to ensure a smooth academic session in 2024 and beyond, paving the way for a vibrant and flourishing educational system.
āI crave your indulgence to allow the ministry know all the issues you think we should know,ā she requested, adding: āI want us to be on the same page, from item one to the last, for the sake of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
āLabour Ministry is not supposed to be reactive but proactive. We should be part of the process to make sure that every issue is addressed.
āI am a product of the university system. We want to be on the same page because of the Renewed Hope Agenda of the government.ā
