Lagos govt reaffirms commitment to fiscal discipline, strengthens ties with ICAN

The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to prudent financial management and a stronger working relationship with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), as part of efforts to sustain transparency and accountability in the use of public funds.

The Accountant-General and Permanent Secretary of the State Treasury Office, Muyiwa John Adetola, gave the assurance while receiving an ICAN delegation led by its President, Haruna Yahaya, during a courtesy visit.

Speaking during the meeting, Adetola attributed the strength and consistency of the state’s financial system to the competence and professionalism of ICAN-certified officers in the public service.

He noted that Lagos has continued to meet statutory deadlines for preparing and presenting its financial statements, a feat he said reflects discipline, expertise and adherence to established standards.

Adetola stressed that accountability, transparency and alignment with global best practices remain central to the state’s financial management approach.

He added that sustained collaboration with ICAN would further strengthen ethical standards and support continuous training for accounting personnel across the public service.

Earlier, ICAN President Mallam Yahaya congratulated Adetola on his appointment, describing it as well-deserved and a testament to his track record of integrity and service.

He also commended Lagos for maintaining its reputation as a leader in public sector governance, noting that its financial systems continue to serve as a reference point for other states and institutions across the country.

These include the introduction of the ICAN Accountability Index to promote best practices in public financial management, as well as structured training programmes tailored to evolving global standards.

He also offered continued professional advisory support to help sustain efficiency and strengthen institutional performance.

The meeting ended with both parties reaffirming their commitment to upholding high ethical standards in the accounting profession, with a shared goal of maintaining public trust and ensuring responsible management of state resources.
