Layi Wasabi: A man who understands his onions

Layi Wasabi

Several pundits and social media commentators have dubbed content creator and skit maker, Layi Wasabi as the most intriguing personality on the internet at the moment. Some have described him as hilarious, others say he is creative; all things encompassing, Layi Wasabi understands his onion.

On Wednesday, June 7, the budding Nigerian content creator published a skit that has coerced his audience, both passive and active viewers to introspect. The episode is simple, yet it explains how life can be meaningful in a moment and could suddenly become morose within a twinkle of an eye.

In his usual jocular manner, the episode titled, “If boys could check their adult height“, a certain character (played by Layi himself) did not make it into adulthood after checking his future result because he “went 6 ft under”. Meanwhile, another character (also played by Layi) who was initially skeptical to check his result (what would be his height in the near future) was quick to appreciate what life had given to him.

Perhaps, the play on words, probably his ability to create a skit that is understandable and relatable. In recent times, most skit makers have lost the propensity to make their audience laugh; more-often-than-not, other skit makers elongate their play without a punchline.

In comedy, it is quintessential to know when to hit the nail on the head. At the moment, Layi Wasabi is the skit maker who is making skits worthy of the viewer’s time, data and energy (though, it’s for relaxation).

The aim and objective of this article is to applaud the creativity and the capabilities for the budding skit maker, Wasabi, a young man from Osogbo, Osun state to stretch the medulla oblongata of his viewers. He depicts reality in a simplistic manner; not trying too hard.

He keeps his production succinct without infusing any form of lasciviousness. In recent times, it has become tedious for a content creator to write a script without inclusion of a voluptuous lady in it.

Understandably, the purpose it to gain traction and retain the interest of the viewers. Unfortunately, this isn’t sustainable, because of the mediocrity of the content.

In this time of promiscuity on social media and across the media, Layi Wasabi has brought balance. He has created a medium where the urban youth can relate with his humorous ‘Osogbo-esque’ accent and embrace his interesting perspective to comedy despite dressing like someone from the older generation.

Wasabi doesn’t want to be cool, because he defines and epitomizes his own form of regality. There is no doubt he understands his game and the world steadily embracing his conceptual framework.
