Liverpool to make improved transfer offer for Southampton player Romeo Lavia

Merseyside club Liverpool are set to make a second transfer offer for 19-year-old Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia.

Reports on Tuesday indicated that Liverpool’s opening bid worth around Ā£37million for Belgian Lavia had been rejected.

Southampton were relegated to the Championship in May. The Saints are refusing to change their stance for an overall package in the region of Ā£50m.

However, negotiations are ongoing and there is now an increasing chance of a deal going through.

Meanwhile, there is a possibility that add-ons take Liverpool to a figure that Southampton deem acceptable. Also, personal terms are not expected to be an issue even if Chelsea retain a strong interest in the player.

Asked about Laviaā€™s future, manager Russell Martin said: ā€œI thought Romeo, considering whatā€™s going on, to play tonight and do all that stuff. It was good for him to get on the pitch as he has not had the minutes other people had.

ā€œYou can ask for an update but I canā€™t give you one because I donā€™t know. Iā€™m going to speak to (sporting director) Jason (Wilcox) now but Iā€™ve been preparing for this game.ā€

Liverpool returned to Merseyside on Monday after a training camp in Germany. The Reds fly out to Singapore on Thursday for a week-long trip which involves games against Leicester and Bayern Munich.
