Madrid derby: Atlético humble Real in stunning 5-2 victory

Atlético Madrid shocked Real Madrid with a five-goal display in a fiery derby, their first such feat against their rivals in almost 75 years.

The hosts roared back from 2-1 down to record a stunning 5-2 win, ending Real’s perfect start to the season and stretching their unbeaten run in La Liga meetings with Los Blancos to six games.

Robin Le Normand opened the scoring with a header, but Real turned the tide through Kylian Mbappe and Arda Guler, who showcased their brilliance with sharp finishes. However, Alexander Sorloth’s header restored parity before half-time, shifting momentum back to Atlético.

Alvarez inspires Atletico’s comeback

After the restart, Julian Alvarez stole the spotlight. He converted a penalty after Arda Guler’s reckless high boot on Nico Gonzalez and followed up with a sublime free-kick that flew beyond Thibaut Courtois. His brace, coming days after a hat-trick against Rayo Vallecano, speaks volume of his scintillating form.

Although Xabi Alonso’s men pressed for a response, their substitutions failed to change the rhythm. Atlético, despite briefly retreating into a defensive shell, remained sharp on the counter. Substitute Antoine Griezmann sealed the contest in stoppage time, calmly slotting home after being played in by Alex Baena.

It was Atlético’s fourth occasion of scoring five or more in a derby. The victory also propelled them to fourth in the table.

Meanwhile, Real tasted defeat for the first time this campaign. Their defense was exposed, and even Mbappe’s sharp finishing could not cover for their structural lapses. Los Blancos remain league leaders by two points, yet their aura of invincibility suffered a serious dent.

With the Champions League up next, Atlético host Eintracht Frankfurt, while Real travel to Kazakhstan to face Kairat Almaty.
