Maduka Okoye has become the first Nigerian goalkeeper in 11 years to record 10 clean sheets in a single season in one of Europe’s top five leagues.
The Udinese shot-stopper achieved the landmark in a 2-0 Serie A victory over Cagliari at the Unipol Domus.
Okoye made three crucial saves from five shots on target. His full-stretch fingertip stop in the first half kept the score level and gave Udinese the platform to take control.
The 26-year-old now sits on 10 shutouts from 28 league appearances this season. He missed the opening weeks of the campaign due to a suspension.
Vincent Enyeama had kept 17 clean sheets for Lille in the 2014/15 Ligue 1 season. No Nigerian goalkeeper in a major European league had reached double digits since.
Okoye has now matched his personal best of 10 clean sheets, which he set with Sparta Rotterdam in the 2020/21 Eredivisie campaign. Achieving that in Serie A underlines his growth since a difficult spell at Watford, where he never made a league appearance.
His resurgence has attracted serious interest. Inter Milan, AC Milan, and Premier League side Bournemouth are all reported to be monitoring the Nigerian ahead of the summer transfer window.
Okoye signed a contract extension with Udinese in January 2026, keeping him at the club until June 2028. His market value has risen to an estimated €7.5 million to €10 million.
The clean sheet against Cagliari adds to a strong run of form. In April, Okoye kept three consecutive Serie A clean sheets for the first time in his career, including a 3-0 win over AC Milan at San Siro.

National contribution
His performances have reignited the battle for Nigeria’s number one shirt. Stanley Nwabali remains highly respected after his displays at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), but uncertainty surrounds his club future. Okoye has now reclaimed the first-choice position with the Super Eagles.
“I’ve become a better player and a better man,” Okoye said recently, reflecting on his Watford ordeal and Italian rebirth.
With three games of the Serie A season remaining, Okoye is ninth among the division’s clean sheet leaders. He has conceded 30 goals in 28 matches, with a save percentage of 72 per cent and 4.5 goals prevented above expectation.
After more than a decade of searching, Nigeria may finally have found the consistency between the sticks that Enyeama once provided. Okoye is no longer a prospect. He is the heir to the throne.
