Manchester City sign defender Marc Guéhi from Crystal Palace

25-year-old defender Marc Guéhi will wear the number 15 Jersey for his new club.

Manchester City have moved decisively to strengthen their defence by completing the signing of Marc Guéhi from Crystal Palace. The England international arrives for £20 million, ending months of speculation around his future.

Guéhi, 25, was nearing the end of his Palace contract and had attracted interest across Europe. However, City accelerated talks this month and quickly reached agreement on personal terms.

After a successful medical on Sunday, the centre-back signed a five-and-a-half-year deal at the Etihad Stadium. City moved swiftly to sign the English centre-back in order to bolster their defensive options as injuries continue to disrupt their defensive structure.

The champions were stretched during Saturday’s derby defeat at Manchester United. Consequently, Guardiola named a youthful back line that struggled to contain sustained pressure. Without a doubt, Guéhi’s arrival adds maturity and tactical discipline to a unit needing immediate balance. Importantly, he brings leadership forged through responsibility rather than reputation.

Since joining Palace in 2021, Guéhi has made 188 appearances across all competitions. He captained the club through its first-ever European campaign this season.

His performances consistently combined defensive assurance with calm progression from the back. That blend made him one of the league’s most reliable centre-backs.

Why Guehi fits Guardiola’s immediate and long-term vision

Statistically, Guéhi ranks among the Premier League’s elite defenders over the past two seasons. He excels in duels, aerial contests, recoveries, and forward line-breaking passes.

This season alone, his interception and duel success numbers place him inside the league’s top bracket. Therefore, City gain both defensive stability and improved buildup efficiency.

His leadership credentials are equally compelling. Notably, he captained Palace to FA Cup victory over City last May – their first major trophy in history.

On the international stage, Guéhi was central to England’s run to the Euro 2024 final. Those experiences have sharpened his composure under pressure.

Speaking after completion, Guéhi described the move as a defining career moment. He called City the benchmark club and praised the squad’s competitive standards.

The signing follows City’s earlier capture of Antoine Semenyo in January. Together, both deals define a focused recruitment strategy rather than luxury spending.
