The Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund (MDGIF) has committed more than N430 billion to gas infrastructure projects across Nigeria as President Bola Tinubu commissioned four major Compressed Natural Gas facilities aimed at expanding cleaner energy adoption.
The disclosure was made by the Executive Director of MDGIF, Oluwole Adama, during a media briefing held alongside the commissioning of the Rolling Energy High-Capacity CNG Station in Abuja.
The latest figure represents a significant increase from the over N287 billion investment announced by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority in November 2025.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, President Tinubu said four flagship projects under the gas infrastructure programme had been completed across the country. They include the FEMADEC Energy CNG station at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri; the Portland Gas mother station in Lagos and daughter station in Abuja; Ibile Oil and Gas refuelling stations across Lagos; and Rolling Energy’s gas facilities spanning Abuja, Kaduna, Kano and Borno.

The President said the projects would help reduce transportation costs, promote cleaner energy use and strengthen Nigeria’s energy security.
Representing the MDGIF executive director, the fund’s Director of Project Management, Hussaini Basaka, said the investment had also attracted substantial private sector participation.
“In ballpark terms, the MDGIF has invested over N430 billion and catalyzed about ten times that amount — about N1.6 trillion in investments,” he said.
Basaka disclosed that the Abuja project alone involved an MDGIF equity stake of 45 per cent. He added that the development consists of 18 facilities, including three mother stations, seven daughter stations and eight LNG downloading stations serving industrial users.
According to him, the fund has so far invested in 31 gas infrastructure projects covering 125 facilities nationwide, with about 10 already commissioned, while others remain under construction.

The Executive Chairman of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative, Ismaeel Ahmed, said the projects reflect strong private sector confidence, noting that investors have committed about $2 billion to gas infrastructure development.
Government officials said the expansion of CNG infrastructure forms part of efforts to reduce reliance on petrol following the removal of fuel subsidies and encourage wider adoption of alternative energy sources.
The Federal Government had earlier launched a N2.5 billion credit programme to support vehicle conversions to compressed natural gas and the production of conversion kits across the country.
