Men, here’s why you must also be hypergamous

One term that often comes up in discussions about choosing our preferences for dating and eventually marriage is “hypergamy.”

Hypergamy, in its simplest sense, refers to the practice of marrying or forming relationships with individuals of a higher social or economic status, something I will call “dating or marrying up”.

Hypergamy has been a term used to describe the tendency of some women to seek partners who possess higher social or economic status than themselves.

It’s important to understand that hypergamy is not about gold-digging or seeking material gains. Instead, it has evolutionary roots, where women historically sought partners who could provide stability and security for their offspring.

While societal norms have evolved over time, the influence of hypergamy may still manifest in modern relationships.

However, hypergamy is not exclusive to women, and both genders may exhibit such tendencies in various ways. In my opinion, most men rarely exhibit this tendency.

Setting standards in relationships isn’t about being excessively picky or unrealistic. It’s about recognizing your worth and understanding what qualities and values you seek in a partner. Embracing these standards can lead to more meaningful connections and healthier relationships.

Why men should also be hypergamous

Just like women, men should have unique desires that go beyond physical attributes or societal expectations. By setting standards, they can ensure they find someone who complements and supports their journey through life, not just anyone who comes around when the soup is done or offers little support to their growth.

Then, they should communicate their preferences without without fear of judgment, just as women should feel empowered to do the same. Honest and open conversations create an environment where both partners can understand each other better, fostering stronger bonds and deeper connections.

Some argue that having high standards is unreasonable, while others believe it is essential for finding the right partner. But, when men become hypergamous, it increases their chances of finding mutual compatibility in their partners and spur them on a path to a fulfilling relationship.

While hypogamy – the practice of marrying down – is still a decent choice as marriage shouldn’t be entirely based on economic or social status, hypergamy is a natural human instinct that influences how we seek out partners who align with our values and aspirations.

The key is to approach setting standards with an open mind, recognizing that everyone is unique and that relationships are about finding compatibility and shared goals.
