Mixed reactions trail Buhari’s death as Nigerians rejoice, reflect on social media

Nigerians on X (formerly Twitter) have taken to the platform in droves to react to the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died in a London hospital on Sunday.

The timeline has since become a mix of grief, mockery, sarcasm, and deep reflections about his time in office.

While some offered calm reflections on Buhari’s legacy, others chose humour and blunt honesty to share how they really felt.

@harrisonJNIOR didn’t hold back, stating that Buhari’s death wasn’t a result of curses or online outrage. Instead, he noted, “He lived a full life and achieved the greatest things he dreamt of.”

He warned users not to expect any miraculous deaths from politicians due to bad governance.

Similarly, @Allezamani pointed out that many people were sending the same kind of energy Buhari gave while in office.

He mocked the outrage of Buhari’s loyalists, saying they shouldn’t be surprised by the backlash.

Popular commentator @Omojuwa urged users not to fall into negativity, warning against “engagement farmers” using the death to bait reactions.

He described Buhari’s life as one well lived and called for restraint and dignity.

In a totally different mood, @Phatbabeluuu tweeted bluntly: “Instead of praying for Buhari, I’d rather count rice.”

On a more reflective note, reality TV star @Symply_Tacha acknowledged Buhari’s role in Nigeria’s journey, simply saying “No matter your views, Muhammadu Buhari was a major part of Nigeria’s story.”

Some users kept it light and sarcastic. @grandpabbychuck responded to the news by joking, “Buhari died? NOTHING BEATS A JET2 HOLIDAY!!”

Another user, @perfectwyS, used the moment to request money, tweeting: “Buhari is dead, send a Nigerian woman money to celebrate.”

@hxnrri threw in a wild jab, saying “I need Tinubu to go aura for aura with Buhari rn.”

There were even demands for a nationwide break to process the news.

@funmilayolajide tweeted: “We need a public holiday to process this. I recommend 14–18 July.”

But not everyone found the jokes amusing. @love_ibanga made it clear she wouldn’t tolerate any whitewashing of Buhari’s legacy on her timeline.

She wrote: “The man was terrible and dealt with us. Even called us lazy.”
