Each day, each year is another time to witness the unique creativity in the movie industry. The movie industry is one industry never going out of vogue. For as long humans are, the act of telling stories through the screen will never go extinct.
Reminiscing back to the beginning of this year, I could almost say my eyes saw diverse Netflix series that one could tag the best the industry has to offer. To your reading today, I bring the most popular Netflix series released in the first half of this year. They also double as the best of Netflix series released this year.
1. Fool me once (2024)
On Netflix, we started this year on a thrilling note. Danny Brocklehurst adapted Harlan Corben’s book, Fool me once into a television miniseries of eight gripping episodes of the same title. This series was released on January 1, 2024 and it was indeed something great to start the year with.
Fool me once, is one thriller series anyone who like mystery spiced up with crime should not miss. It is a modern whodunnit movie that would not release into its perpetrator into viewers’ eyes till the end of the series.
The movie series had a blend of talented actors who acted out their characters to make the movie a viewing success. Fool me once is rated 6.8/10 on IMDb but I believe it deserves more, most especially for the Maya Stern role by Michelle Keegan.
2. One Day
On February 8, 2024, Netflix fooled us into thinking they released a romantic series and until the seventh episode, we did not know what the film really was. This film would make you say yes immediately to anyone you love because you know time waits for no man.
I saw some actors for the first time in the movie. These days, most Netflix movies pushes not so popular to take major roles and boom, it accelerates them into the spotlight. One Day introduced me to Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall and as a first-timer in seeing them both on screen, their chemistry was a 10/10.
As much as I want to tell you about this movie, I definitely do not want to drop spoilers. But one thing I think you would love is Emma Morley’s speech delivery- the subtlety.
3. Furies
Let’s spice the list a bit by bringing in something French. Yes, you heard me right. Furies is a series that covers the mechanisms of street gang business. France as well as the supremacy of some lords that control business in the territory. It also uncover the tale of the deadly mercenary, The Fury.
There are lot of plot twists in this movie and it is definitely not scarce of unique action scenes. It is surely a movie for feminists and people who like to see indomitable women lead in movies. The movie leaves you on a cliffhanger but it is definitely worth your watch before the next season. It rates 6.3/10 on IMDb.
4. The Signal
Here is our something German. German movies are too scientific, their academic prowess finds a way to seep into their movie. The Signal is a five episode movie that explains the tale of missing astronauts.
The 5- episode movie leaves you yearning for more as each episode is a minute closer to uncovering the mystery. What Germans know how to do is to get into characte such that it is so easy for them to portray the emotions. In this series, discovering can be thrilling but can also be a dividing force. The rich always want to have the hems of power, always even when you think they don’t want to.
5. The Gentlemen
Guy Ritchie did a thing here with the series, The Gentlemen. This series has a way of keeping you in the flow, containing your interest without doing much, just the visuals then the composure of the characters. One could almost say the actors were made for that character. Little wonder, IMDb rates it as 7.5/10.
The series is regarded as a comedy all thanks to Jimmy and Freddy. Freddy’s character caused the whole hullabaloo the movie’s plot dwelt on. The lead characters, Edward Horniman and Susie Glass led the movie with the vibe we expected. They were the most serious characters the movie had- they meant business. The series is a spin-off to the 2019 movie of the same title and this sequel was released March 7, 2024.
‘People Either Survive In The Jungle Or Exist In The Zoo. Few Recognize The Significance Of The Paradoxical Reconciliation Of The Two.’
You want to know who said this? Go and watch the movie on Netflix! But mind you, this is a series that can have you saying, “Language, please” every minute.
6. 3 Body Problem
Where are my fans of sci-fi at? Finally, I have got something for you. I am not into sciences but watching the movie exposed me to so many physics jargons and concepts. It was a movie set in another approach to alienism and space concept.
3 Body Problem was released on Netflix on March 21, 2024 and sci-fi movie lovers were all over it. It is third adaptation of Liu Cixin’s book of the same title. The series is already renewed for a second season and we expect it is nothing less than the first.
7. Dead Boy Detectives
What movie combines spookiness and horror without making the audience actually scared? It is definitely Dead Boy Detectives. When the series premiered on April 25, it caught the attention of The Sandman fans. The characters Death and Despair from The Sandman featured in this movie. Since anything Sandman gets people’s attention, people found themselves watching the series.
This series was nowhere disappointing and each episode carried its own level of thrilling experience. When you talk about ghosts, demons, spirits, goblins, fairies and afterlife, this movie is a full pack. The leading characters based on Neil Gaiman’s Dead Boy Detectives comics, Charles Rowland and Edwin Payne were the perfect duo we needed.
This American supernatural horror detective comedy-drama is rated 7.5/10 on IMDb. Trust me, it is an 8- episode exhilarating experience.
8. Baby Reindeer
I can still hear Martha’s laughter echoing in my ears. God! When people say they want their partner to be obsessed with them, they don’t know what real obsession is. If you watch this movie, you will desist from saying that. Just watch the series, you will relate.
The plot is the based on the true life events of the protagonist, Richard Gadd which makes the movie related than expected. But really, this Netflix series was a good one. It rates 7.8/10 on IMDb.
9. Supacell
Supacell is the best thing that happened to the Blacks on Netflix for now. It’s been around for a month and we cannot stop gushing about it. Why haven’t you watched it? It is one movie that deserves the hype.
The Rapman developed series through superhero telling raises awareness for the sickle cell disease. Looking for black bred superhero series, this is your cue. Fans are literally begging Netflix for a second season!
