Nacional player Juan Izquierdo has tragically passed away after collapsing during a Copa Libertadores match earlier this month.
The 27-year-old suffered an irregular heartbeat, leading to his sudden collapse on the pitch.
Izquierdo suffered a cardiac arrest after collapsing during Uruguayan club Nacional’s game against Brazil’s Sao Paulo on 22 August.
The defender had been receiving treatment at Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo, with his condition initially described as ‘stable’. Despite early optimism, his condition deteriorated in recent days.
“It is with the deepest sorrow and shock in our hearts that the Club Nacional announces the death of our beloved player Juan Izquierdo,” Nacional posted on X.

Izquierdo collapsed few minutes to the end of match
On Sunday, Izquierdo was put on a ventilator and had been under neurological care since Monday. He collapsed in the 84th minute of the match against Sao Paulo, having been a half-time substitute for Sebastián Coates.
The player received immediate medical treatment on the field after falling. He was immediately transferred to an intensive care unit, but his condition worsened.
After Izquierdo collapsed last Thursday, Uruguay’s first and second division leagues were postponed as a mark of respect.
Meanwhile, Spanish newspaper El País reported that Izquierdo’s wife had recently given birth to their second child just ten days before the incident.
Also, it is confirmed Izquierdo had no known heart condition prior to this tragic event. This only adds more shock to his untimely demise.
