NBS report reveals 12% increase in cooking gas price in one year

The Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS) released a report indicating a 12% increase in the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, over the past year.

According to the report titled ‘Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) Price Watch (January 2024),’ the average retail price for refilling a 5kg cylinder rose by 3.5% from N4,963 in December 2023 to N5,139 in January 2024.

Nassarawa had the highest average price for a 5kg cylinder refill at N5,790, followed by Jigawa (N5,682) and Gombe (N5,660).

In contrast, Kaduna recorded the lowest price at N4,150, with Ogun and Osun following at N4,751 and N4,763, respectively.

Analyzing by zones, the North-East recorded the highest average retail price for a 5kg cylinder at N5,296, trailed by the North-Central at N5,240, while the South-West had the lowest at N4,805.

For the 12.5kg cylinder, the average retail price increased by 1.96% from N11,510 in December 2023 to N11,736 in January 2024, reflecting a 14.2% year-on-year rise from N10,277 in January 2023.

In state profiles, Cross River had the highest average price for a 12.5kg cylinder refill at N13,040, followed by Jigawa (N12,875) and Zamfara (N12,725).

Conversely, Kaduna had the lowest price at N9,699, with Kwara and Niger at N10,000 and N10,400, respectively.

By zones, the South-South recorded the highest average retail price for a 12.5kg cylinder at N12,602, followed by the North-West at N12,225, while the South-West had the lowest price at N11,189.
