The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has commenced the placement and payment of 10,000 beneficiaries under its Youth Internship Scheme, a one-year practical skills training program designed to empower young people across the Niger Delta region.

The initiative, which aims to equip participants with hands-on experience in various organizations, has now moved into its next phase, with monthly stipends being disbursed to successful applicants.

According to a statement released by the NDDC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Seledi Thompson-Wakama, the selection process was thorough, transparent, and fair, following an overwhelming response of over 3.2 million applicants who registered before the deadline.

“This unprecedented response highlights the immense potential and aspirations of our youth. We remain committed to ensuring that this life-changing opportunity reaches the most deserving candidates, creating a lasting impact and paving the way for a brighter future,” the statement read.

As part of the selection process, the Commission developed a comprehensive digital database capturing essential information about youths in the region, including their qualifications, skills, interests, and employment status.

This data-driven approach will guide the NDDC in designing targeted programs that address the specific needs of the Niger Delta’s young population.

To further strengthen transparency and accountability, the NDDC partnered with KPMG, a globally recognised consultancy firm, to enhance its corporate governance framework.

The firm produced a Governance Advisory Report to support the Commission’s transition from a transaction-based to a transformation-driven policy approach.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to stakeholder engagement, emphasising that youth and community leaders would continue to play a crucial role in shaping the future of the Niger Delta.

The NDDC expressed gratitude to all stakeholders, including applicants of the Youth Internship Scheme, for their patience and support throughout the rigorous selection process.

“Our commitment to transparency and fairness, in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, guided the selection of beneficiaries,” the statement concluded.

The NDDC reiterated its dedication to empowering the youth, fostering sustainable development, and ensuring that initiatives like the Youth Internship Scheme contribute to long-term economic and social growth in the Niger Delta region.
