The Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), has issued a directive to all NDLEA commands and formations to take immediate action against the illegal sale and misuse of nitrous oxide, commonly known as ‘laughing gas’.
According to the statement made available on Tuesday, July 11, by the NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, the move came in response to the increasing recreational use of the gas, which is becoming popular among young individuals seeking an intoxicated or euphoric experience.
According to the NDLEA, nitrous oxide, often utilized by dentists and medical professionals for sedation and pain relief during minor medical procedures, has gained popularity as a party drug in Nigeria. It is transferred from its containers into balloons, which are then inhaled to achieve its desired effects.

The NDLEA said its decision to crack down on the illegal sale and use of nitrous oxide is based on the analysis of its adverse effects on abusers. These effects include dizziness, disorientation, headaches, fainting spells, hallucinations, and even suffocation due to oxygen deprivation. Neurological complications, particularly psychiatric symptoms, have also been observed.
While the NDLEA works with other stakeholders, including the Federal Ministry of Health, to develop comprehensive measures addressing this issue, the agency said it is determined to take strict action against anyone involved in the illegal sale or use of nitrous oxide, regardless of their social status in order to protect public health.
The NDLEA warned parents, guardians, and all concerned parties to remain vigilant and caution their young ones against experimenting with or abusing this substance, as it poses serious threats to mental and overall well-being.
