NEMA launches Hazard Countrywide Risk Analysis

In a landmark move to enhance disaster preparedness and response, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Thursday unveiled the Nigerian Hazard Countrywide Risk Analysis 2024 at Fraser Suites, Abuja.

The event brought together government officials, development partners, and stakeholders to mark a new chapter in Nigeriaā€™s emergency management strategy.

Vice President oKashim Shettima served as the special guest of honour.

In his keynote address, Shettima praised NEMA, UNICEF, and other collaborators for producing a document that addresses the nationā€™s pressing disaster management needs.

ā€œThis initiative is critical to building a resilient Nigeria capable of addressing hazards effectively. The dedication of all stakeholders is truly commendable,ā€ Shettima said.

NEMAā€™s Director General, Hajia Umar, highlighted the comprehensive scope of the document. Developed over seven months in partnership with UNICEF, the risk analysis examines 12 key hazards, including flooding, epidemics, and conflicts, down to the Local Government Area (LGA) level.

ā€œThis document goes beyond being a mere resource; it is a strategic tool to guide our preparedness and response plans. With lessons from past disasters, we are better positioned to tackle future risks,ā€ Umar explained.

Representatives from international organiaations, including Trond Jensen, Head of UN OCHA Nigeria, and Cristian Munduate, UNICEF Country Representative, lauded NEMAā€™s leadership. They emphasised the importance of collaboration in addressing Nigeriaā€™s unique challenges in disaster management.

The event reached its climax with the unveiling of the Hazard Countrywide Risk Analysis 2024 by the Vice President, accompanied by dignitaries. Applause filled the room as the document was officially launched, signifying a pivotal moment in Nigeriaā€™s disaster management journey.

The comprehensive analysis serves as a vital blueprint, enabling stakeholders across government and non-governmental sectors to better understand and mitigate risks.

It underscores the importance of proactive measures and collaboration in safeguarding lives and properties.
