NFF disowns critical statement on Troost-Ekong and Dessers after South Africa draw

NFF denies blaming Troost-Ekong and Dessers after 1-1 draw with South Africa, stressing unity as Super Eagles chase World Cup spot.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has moved swiftly to distance itself from a controversial post-match statement that appeared to criticise Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong and striker Cyriel Dessers.

The remarks followed Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with South Africa in Bloemfontein, but the Federation insists they were not sanctioned.

In the statement, which circulated under the name of NFF Director of Communications Ademola Olajire, described Dessers as “sluggish” and blamed Troost-Ekong for the own goal that handed Bafana Bafana the lead.

It even referenced Dessers’ struggles in Uyo during the previous fixture, claiming he failed to spark Nigeria’s attack in Bloemfontein.

However, NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi categorically denied that the comments reflected the official stance of the Federation. He stressed that no individual player should be held responsible for the team’s performance.

“I saw the release just like everyone else did. The NFF did not authorise it,” Sanusi said. “We have great respect for all our players. When we win, it is a team effort, and when we lose, it is also collective. Blaming individuals is unfair.”

Sanusi defended Troost-Ekong, stating that his own goal was purely accidental. “His intention was to clear the ball. Anyone who understands football knows these things happen,” he explained.

He also praised the squad’s resilience and confirmed that efforts were already underway to regroup ahead of the remaining qualifiers and the upcoming AFCON in Morocco.

To reassure fans, Sanusi insisted there were no internal rifts within the team or coaching staff. He stressed that the government and Federation remain proud of the Super Eagles’ efforts, while also confirming that disciplinary measures would be taken regarding the unauthorised press release.

What the standings look like

Currently, Nigeria sits third in Group C with 11 points from eight matches, trailing leaders South Africa by six points. With must-win encounters against Lesotho and Benin Republic looming in October, the Super Eagles face a decisive battle to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
