Career in International Organizations

Okonjo-Iweala gained expertise in development economics, governance, and finance at the World Bank. Her work focused on poverty reduction, economic reforms, and sustainable development.

She eventually rise through the ranks and ascended to the post of Vice President and corporate secretary of the World Bank in 2001. However, her accomplishments didn’t stop there because she continued to make significant contributions to the organisation. Okonjo-Iweala shaped the institution’s policies to address Africa’s development challenges.

In 2003, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala made history by becoming Nigeria’s first female Finance Minister. Her impactful tenure spanned two periods: 2003 to 2006 and 2011 to 2015. Finance Minister implemented reforms to strengthen Nigeria’s economy, improve public financial management, and promote transparency.

She led successful negotiations to reduce Nigeria’s external debt.. Furthermore, she played a crucial role in combatting corruption. Moreover, she spearheaded initiatives aimed at enhancing fiscal discipline and, in addition, boosting revenue generation.
