Nick Kyrgios returned to ATP competition in Brisbane but his comeback stumbled at the first hurdle as he was outplayed 6-3, 6-4 by Aleksandar Kovacevic. The 27-year-old American seized control of the match and dominated key points, wrapping up victory in 65 minutes.
Kyrgios had featured in a handful of singles matches across the past three seasons, but injuries repeatedly halted momentum.
Granted a wildcard, he searched for rhythm yet clutched his elbow and relied on an underarm serve for a point as it was evident that he lagged in terms of match sharpness.

Focus shifts to Melbourne wildcard bid and fitness rebuild
As a result of his recent struggles, and now his most recent loss, Kyrgios currently sits at 670 in the rankings. With the Australian Open fast approaching, he hopes another wildcard will follow if fitness improves.
Next up is doubles duty with Thanasi Kokkinakis. He also lines up for the Kooyong Classic as preparation continues. Meanwhile, Kovacevic advances to meet Cameron Norrie or Ugo Humbert in round two.
