Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

The international community has erupted in calls for a ceasefire following a recent attack between Iran and Israel. World leaders and influential organizations have condemned the violence and urged both sides to de-escalate the situation.

Nigeria, a major player on the African continent, joined the chorus for peace. Nigeria, in a statement signed by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Francisca Omayuli, on Sunday, noted that diplomatic efforts were underway to defuse the situation and prevent a broader conflict in the Middle East.

Omayuli advised that both nations must consider the global commitment to peaceful conflict resolution for the betterment of global peace and security.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria joins other Members of the International Community to call on Iran and Israel to exercise restraint, as diplomatic efforts are ongoing to ease tension and avoid a wider conflict in the Middle East.

“In this critical period, it behooves the two countries to reflect on the universal commitment to peaceful resolution of conflicts, for the advancement of global peace and security,” the statement read.

The G7, a group of leading industrialized nations including the United States, Japan, Germany, France, Britain, Italy, and Canada, issued a strong statement expressing “full solidarity and support to Israel and its people.” However, the G7 went beyond simply siding with Israel. Their statement also demanded that “Iran and its proxies cease their attacks” and threatened “further measures” in response to continued aggression.

The European Commission echoed the G7’s sentiment. President Ursula von der Leyen called on Iran to “immediately cease” attacks, emphasizing the need for all actors to “refrain from further escalation” and work towards regional stability. The bloc’s foreign policy chief condemned the attack in the “strongest terms,” viewing it as a threat to regional security.

These reactions highlight the international community’s deep concern about the escalating tensions between Iran and Israel. The potential for a wider conflict has prompted urgent calls for a ceasefire and a de-escalation of hostilities.
