Nigeria has reaffirmed its dedication to strengthening international partnerships and enhancing cooperation with member states of the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS) during the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications to Vice President Kashim Shettima, conveyed this at a high-level OACPS meeting chaired by Angola.
Representing President Bola Tinubu at the global event, Mr Shettima underscored the significance of solidarity among member states in addressing various global challenges. He further reiterated Nigeriaās commitment to the OACPSā objectives while addressing key national priorities.
He said: “Nigeria remains a principal partner of OACPS, championing our shared values of democracy, diaspora engagement, and development. Our presence here at the UN General Assembly allows us to amplify these priorities on the global stage and explore avenues for deeper collaboration.”
Mr Shettima seized the opportunity to address Nigeria’s recent designation as a high-risk jurisdiction for anti-money laundering concerns.

He stated, āWe are here to clarify the situation and engage in meaningful dialogue with our international partners to address these issues.ā
He also reiterated Nigeria’s strong commitment to the initiatives of the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS), particularly its focus on the ongoing crisis in Haiti.
While recognizing Kenya’s significant contribution of 400 troops to support Haiti, Shettima underscored Nigeria’s longstanding leadership in South-South cooperation and solidarity.
āOur technical aid corps programme, which has sent teachers and doctors to the Caribbean, exemplifies Nigeria’s commitment to uplifting fellow OACPS nations,ā Vice President Shettima added.
Mr Shettima presented Nigeria’s strategic approach to harness its status as Africa’s most populous nation to advocate for the interests of the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS), champion fair treatment in global financial systems, and deepen partnerships with both developed and developing nations.
āWe’re advancing Nigeria’s priorities while amplifying the collective voice of the OACPS. President Tinubu’s vision for Nigeria is in harmony with the OACPS agenda. In our interconnected global landscape, our prosperity is closely linked to that of our partner nations,ā VP Shettima highlighted.
Speaking, OACPS Secretary-General Georges Rebelo Pinto Chikoti commended Nigeria as a driving force within the OACPS and a key member state.
He stated that the meeting aimed to enhance cooperation with Nigeria and expressed gratitude for the nationās substantial contributions.
Chikoti expressed optimism about the United Nations’ continued engagement and commitment to assisting member states in navigating various challenges.
He also underscored the importance of strengthening partnerships between OACPS member states and the European Union, emphasising critical collaborations in areas such as environmental sustainability, infrastructure development, education, and business growth.
