Miracle Oluebube Ezechukwu ran a stunning 22.91 seconds to win the U20 women’s 200 metres at MTN Champs Jos, delivering the fastest time by a Nigerian woman on home soil since the 2021 Olympic Trials.
The performance, achieved with a +1.4 metres per second wind reading, gives a national lead for the season and secures her qualification for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in both the 100 metres and 200 metres.
Ezechukwu’s 22.91 now ranks as the fourth fastest time ever run by a Nigerian junior athlete. The only faster junior times belong to the legendary Mary Onyali, Falilat Ogunkoya, and Fatimah Muhammed.
The final proved historically deep. Rosemary Chigozie Nwankwo finished second in a personal best of 23.19 seconds. Lucy Chiamaka Nwankwo took third, also running a new personal best of 23.76 seconds. All three medallists dipped under 24 seconds in the same race.
Fastest on home soil since 2021
Ezechukwu’s time is the fastest 200 metres run inside Nigeria since Grace Nwokocha won the 2021 National Trials in 22.87 seconds. That performance came during a period that saw Nigerian sprinting reach its peak in the last Olympic cycle.
The 22.91 also surpasses the Commonwealth Games qualifying standard, adding to the 100 metres standard she had already achieved. She now enters the conversation as one of the country’s brightest prospects for the Glasgow Games.
Ezechukwu’s performance, alongside the personal bests from the Nwankwo sisters, shows a promising generation of Nigerian women’s sprinters ready to challenge on the continental and global stage.
