Nigerians: An Interesting People In A Challenging Land

Nigerians

At 60 years of independence, basic amenities remain a luxury for many Nigerians. Unstable power supply and the state of the education system, to name just a few.

The constant power tussle between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government is legendary. Sections of roads in the country are in a deplorable state.

The health care system is equally facing its own challenges. However, when some Nigerians begin to ponder on the sad realities of the nation, it leaves them with unpalatable thoughts.

Despite the problems the people face daily, it does not stop them from finding the humour in any situation. In recent times, Nigerians have shown that they are truly good people who look out for one another. However, questionable leadership has hindered the progress of the nation.

The period during COVID-19 lockdown is a notable example. Many lost their regular means of livelihood but some were able to learn a new skill online. Buying and selling online became the norm as many diversified their means to survive in the lockdown.

Good people, Great nation! This phrase came alive during the #EndSARS protests. Nigerians supported each other and spoke in one accord for the cause. However, even with the seriousness of the protests, the humour was not lost.

The interesting part of it all was the jokes that were created on Nigeria’s social media space.

The power of social media

The importance of social media cannot be overlooked. It is more than just a platform to disseminate information. And Nigerians have capitalized on this relevant tool.

For example, there is an unofficial rule which dictates that a non-Nigerian is not allowed to disrespect a Nigerian on social media. Disobey at your own peril, as Twitter Savages await!

There is a current trend on social media and many persons have jumped on the bandwagon. While it is more or less a means of having fun, others have taken it to a whole new level by printing ID cards and T-Shirts to affirm their membership to the so-called association.

The undiluted sense of humour of Nigerians has helped most stay sane, while living in lack in the midst of plenty. This resilient characteristic qualifies the unique people of Nigeria as the happiest on earth, a badge we wear with pride.
