Nigeria’s first science museum to open in Abuja May 21

The Nigerian Academy of Science has announced plans to officially open Nigeria’s first dedicated science museum to the public on May 21.

The NAS–T.Y. Danjuma Museum and Library, situated in Abuja, was funded and inaugurated in 2025 by retired General Theophilus Danjuma.

In a statement released on Friday and signed by the President of NAS, Abubakar Sambo, alongside the academy’s Public Affairs Secretary, Chinedum Babalola, the academy said the facility would offer an engaging environment for scientific exhibitions, learning activities, and access to educational materials.

“The museum and library is expected to serve students, researchers, educators, and the public by fostering curiosity, innovation, and a deeper appreciation for science and its role in national development,” the statement read.

The academy explained that schools, organisations, and groups would be able to book visits, guided tours, and exhibitions, allowing for practical learning experiences and collaborative activities.

It further stated that the museum would contribute to improving Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics education across Nigeria.

“While there are permanent exhibits, there will also be specialised themed exhibitions organised on a regular basis,” the statement read.

According to the statement, the academy is also seeking partnerships with corporate bodies, development agencies, and other stakeholders to support the long-term sustainability and expansion of the museum.

As part of the opening ceremony, Kunle Odunsi, Director of the University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Centre, will deliver a public lecture titled, “Redefining Cancer Care in the Era of Immunotherapy and Precision Oncology: Implications for Research, Treatment, and Policy in Nigeria.”

The event will also feature the induction of seven eminent individuals as Fellows of the Nigerian Academy of Science.
