Nigeria’s Flying Eagles edge Saudi Arabia to boost FIFA U20 World Cup knockout hopes

The Flying Eagles of Nigeria secured a crucial 3-2 victory over Saudi Arabia on Friday morning to revive their Round of 16 prospects at the FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile.

The dramatic encounter in Talca was packed with goals, momentum shifts, and a last-gasp winner.

Nigeria struck first through Nasiru Salihu, who calmly converted in the 10th minute to hand the West Africans an early lead. However, their advantage lasted barely 11 minutes as Amar Alyuhaybi equalised for Saudi Arabia, punishing a lapse in concentration.

Despite the setback, the Flying Eagles regained control before the break. Amos Ochoche finished superbly in the 38th minute, ensuring Nigeria carried a slender 2-1 cushion into halftime.

Saudi Arabia fight back but Bameyi delivers late

The second half began with Saudi Arabia pushing forward, and their persistence was rewarded in the 51st minute when Talal Haji struck to restore parity once again. With the score tied at 2-2, tension gripped the stadium as both teams searched for the decisive breakthrough.

Nigeria created chances but found the Saudi defence difficult to unlock, while their own backline was forced into crucial interventions.

Yet, the seven-time African champions refused to relent. Their determination finally paid off deep into added time when captain Daniel Bameyi showed remarkable composure from the penalty spot. His precise finish sealed a dramatic 3-2 victory which sparked wild celebrations from the Nigerian bench and fans.

This vital result not only gave Nigeria their first three points of the tournament but also significantly boosted their chances of progressing to the knockout stage. With the two-time finalists now sitting in a stronger position, they need at least a positive result in their final group game against Colombia on Monday to confirm qualification.
