NITDA pushes for unified data system

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) is calling for data harmonization to support digital identity and national planning in Nigeria.

The agency made the call during the first National CRVS Coordination Committee meeting, citing fragmented databases as a barrier to effective governance.

Director-General Kashifu Inuwa said integration of NIMC, NPC, and NBS records is vital for evidence-based planning and efficient service delivery.

He linked the harmonization efforts to President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, stressing the need for a single, citizen-focused digital identity system.

NITDA pledged to develop standards and provide support for digitizing civil registration processes across all involved government institutions.

Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo endorsed the move, noting it would eliminate redundant registrations like NIN, BVN, and passport records.

According to the minister, a centralized identity system would reduce administrative costs and ease access to government services for Nigerians.

NITDA also said resolving existing data silos would enable secure and interoperable data exchange between government systems and agencies.

The agency expressed readiness to drive regulatory frameworks and coordinate interagency efforts for identity data integration nationwide.

The harmonized data platform will form the foundation for Nigeria’s long-term digital identity infrastructure and public service modernization.
