NLC, TUC meet with FG, may call off strike


The Federal Government on Wednesday engaged in discussions with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) in a concerted effort to bring an end to the ongoing strike. 

This was communicated through a statement by Dr. Makut Simon Macham, the Special Adviser (Media) to the Honourable Minister of Labour and Employment.

The meeting convened at the office of the National Security Adviser, saw the participation of key figures such as NSA Mallam Nuhu Robadu, Minister of Labour Simon Bako Lalong, Minister of State Hon. Nkeiruka Onyeajeocha, NSA Acting Permanent Secretary Ministry Labour Mr. Emmanuel Igbinosa, and the Director of Trade Union Services.

News Round The Clock (NRTC) gathered that the meeting, led by TUC President Comrade Festus Osifo, NLC Secretary General Emmanuel Ugboaja, TUC Secretary General Nuhu Toro, and other prominent labor leaders, was conducted behind closed doors.

Speaking after the meeting, the Minister of Labour and Employment Simon Lalong emphasized that the choice of the NSA office for the meeting was driven by security concerns linked to the strike and its origins. 

Lalong emphasized that both parties engaged in open, productive, and sincere dialogues regarding the government’s actions to address labor concerns related to the incident in Imo State.

He mentioned that the labor representatives committed to presenting the discussion outcomes to their members and assessing the government’s appeal to end the strike for the nation’s benefit.

Earlier, the President of TUC Comrade Festus Osifo, President of TUC, described the meeting as thorough, highlighting the government team’s assurances regarding the apprehension of suspects related to the Imo incident.

Osifo further detailed that the government provided insights into both executed and planned actions to address labor grievances.

Following this, he expressed the intention of the labor to evaluate the meeting’s outcomes and effectively communicate them to members, paving the way for informed decisions on the path forward.
