The Oyo State Government has confirmed that no one was injured following a rock movement and tremor at Iyamopo Hill in Igbeti, located in the Olorunsogo Local Government Area of the state.
The incident occurred over the weekend and raised concerns among residents.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the state’s Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, reassured the public that the event was caused by natural geological processes, specifically the physical weathering of rocks due to extreme heat from February to May, followed by a sudden drop in temperature.
This caused the rocks to crack and peel, leading to minor tremors and the movement of rocks in the area.
The government also clarified that there were no casualties during the incident and urged the public not to panic.
Experts from the Oyo State Solid Mineral Development Agency, under the leadership of Director General Biodun Oni, have been dispatched to the site to carry out assessments.
Additionally, geologists from the University of Ibadan are collaborating with the state government to analyze the geological activity and offer long-term solutions.
As a precaution, the authorities have advised residents in the affected area to temporarily vacate until the ongoing evaluations and safety measures are completed.
The government assured citizens that the safety of residents remains a priority, and further updates will be shared as investigations progress.
