The Presidency has rejected a viral online report alleging that President Bola Tinubu plans to push constitutional amendments to rename Nigeria the “United States of Nigeria” and abolish Sharia law in the northern region.
In a statement issued yesterday, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described the claims as completely false and urged the public to disregard them.
Onanuga said the report, which cited unnamed sources, formed part of a wider attempt to mislead the public and destabilise the country ahead of the next election cycle.

He said the publication was deliberately crafted to inflame political tensions and trigger public disaffection.
“The story, which cited anonymous sources, is part of the dubious plot by some desperate politicians to create disaffection in our country, stir up a political crisis, and heat the polity ahead of the general elections,” he said.

He also condemned those behind the report, describing them as “agents of destabilisation and merchants of disorder.”
Onanuga further clarified that there is no plan to introduce any constitutional proposal tagged “Project True Federation” to the National Assembly by December 15, as claimed in the viral story.
Onanuga stressed that any attempt to change Nigeria’s name or alter foundational legal systems such as Sharia law cannot happen through executive decision.
He explained that such changes would require a strict constitutional process, including approval by a two-thirds majority in both chambers of the National Assembly and concurrence from at least 24 State Houses of Assembly.
He added that Tinubu remains focused on economic recovery and ongoing reform efforts rather than political distractions.

“President Tinubu is focused on the arduous task of entrenching and deepening the economic reforms his administration has embarked upon.
