The Federal Government has declared that only teachers certified by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) will be permitted to teach in schools across the country.
To strengthen professional standards in the education sector, the Ministry of Education announced the restructuring of the TRCN and the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI).
According to a statement issued on Sunday via the ministry’s official X account, the TRCN will oversee regulation and licensing of teachers, while the NTI will focus on in-service training and community-based professional development programmes.
Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, outlined fresh guidelines for the agencies, which include teacher registration, professional development, compliance monitoring, welfare, and curriculum standards.

He said: “No teacher will stand before a Nigerian classroom without TRCN registration & licensing. This guarantees competent and professional teaching for every child.
“This reform is about results and sustainability. Nigerian children will be taught by the best, prepared for the best, and supported by the best. It is Renewed Hope in action.”
The minister further cautioned secondary schools to ensure that their staff are duly certified, warning that uncertified schools would no longer serve as examination centres.
From 2027, accreditation of public and private schools for examinations such as WASSCE, NABTEB, NECO, and NBIAS will be strictly tied to TRCN certification of teachers, he added.
