‘None of your faves dared smoke on screen before me’ — Terry G boasts about his influence on Nigerian music culture

Nigerian singer and songwriter Terry G has claimed responsibility for making it acceptable for artistes to smoke cannabis in their music videos.

Taking to his X handle on Sunday, the self-styled Akpako Master stated that before his rise to fame in the late 2000s, many Nigerian artistes lacked the confidence to openly display cannabis use on screen.

“No hard feelings, it’s all love, but no forget say if no be my sacrifice, none of your fav go get liver to smoke Igbo for screen,” he wrote.

The comment sparked mixed reactions, with some social media users challenging his assertion. Critics pointed to Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, who was known for smoking on stage and in public long before Terry G’s era.

Terry G, whose real name is Gabriel Oche Amanyi, is a Nigerian rapper, singer, and record producer. He is known for his unconventional style, high-energy performances, and controversial lyrics. Over the years, he has built a reputation as one of Nigeria’s most unpredictable music figures, with his fourth studio album, Book of Ginjah, released in 2013.
