The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has handed Katsina United a ₦9 million fine and strict disciplinary sanctions following serious breaches during their league clash with Barau FC on Saturday.

According to a statement from the league body, Katsina United were found guilty of multiple violations of the NPFL Framework and Rules, particularly concerning crowd misconduct and inadequate security arrangements at the Ahmadu Dikko Stadium.

The encounter, which should have been a routine fixture, turned chaotic after home fans invaded restricted areas, forcing officials to intervene. Also, Barau FC player Nana Abraham was targeted and physically assaulted by the away fans with pictures showing wounds after having his neck cut.

In response, the NPFL Disciplinary Committee imposed a ₦9 million penalty and ruled that all Katsina United’s home fixtures will henceforth be played behind closed doors and at a neutral venue — the New Jos Stadium — until further notice.

The decision, the league explained, aims to uphold the integrity of the competition and protect players, officials, and fans from potential harm. It also serves as a warning to other clubs about the consequences of failing to control their home environments.

League’s tough stance on indiscipline

The NPFL emphasised that the safety of everyone within and around the stadium remains a top priority. “The sanctions were necessary to preserve order, fairness, and professionalism in the league,” an official statement read.

This isn’t the first time Katsina United have faced disciplinary scrutiny, as they were cautioned in previous seasons over crowd-related issues.

Furthermore, the league body granted Katsina United a 48-hour window to submit a formal appeal if they intend to contest the decision. However, the club risks harsher penalties should the appeal fail or be deemed frivolous.

By taking decisive action, the NPFL hopes to reinforce discipline and signal that every club — no matter its stature — must play by the rules.
