Nouns that always end with ‘s’

NRTC English

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

Certain words in English always have an “s” at the end because they are inherently plural.

Some of these words include surroundings, headquarters, savings, premises, outskirts, rites, belongings, thanks, likes/dislikes, congratulations, earnings, goods, remains, and more.

This means you can’t use them without the “s.” When talking about them, we need to use plural verbs.

For instance, when you want to talk about the outer edges of a town or city, you’ll need to use “outskirts.” This word is consistently plural.

Example: They live on the outskirts of the city.

Ceremonies, rituals, and customs are described using “rites.” Keep in mind that this term is never singular.

Example: The ancient tribe had unique burial rites.

When talking about preferences, we use “likes” and “dislikes.” These are always plural, as they mean various preferences.

Example: My likes include reading and hiking.

Whether you are discussing a building or a piece of land, “premises” is the term to use. Notice how it never goes without the “s”.

Example: The new store is opening on these premises.

When referring to the main office or center of an organization, “headquarters” is the go-to term. It never stands alone ā€“ always with the “s.”

Example: The company moved to its new headquarters.

It is also important to note that the money you make from work is referred to as earnings. It’s a term that inherently carries an “s.”

Example: His earnings have allowed him to pursue his passion.

When someone has passed away, we refer to their body as remains. This term is consistently plural.

Example: His remains have been laid to rest.

So, when you use words like these, remember to include the “s” and pair them with plural verbs in your sentences.
